Zirconia is a very advanced industrial ceramic materials, it offers high strength, wear resistance, and flexibility far beyond those of most other technical ceramics. It surpasses most common ceramics with its distinctive strengths of “no brittleness”. The typical one is yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP zirconia), it is the mostly used member of to PSZ zirconias group. It is composition of 94.7% ZrO2 + 5.2% Y2O3 (weight percentage) or 97.0 ZrO2 + 3.0% Y2O3 (mol percentage). 



There are several grades of zirconia, and the most common of which are yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) and magnesia partially stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ). Both of these materials offer excellent properties, suitable for piston and plungers use. Their unique resistance to crack propagation and high thermal expansion make it an excellent material for joining ceramics with metals such as pistons and plungers units.

Compared with alumina ceramics, Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) pistons and plungers could withstand even higher temperature and get much better corrosion and wearing resistance. As an extremely refractory material, working temperature of zirconia parts could be as high as 1800℃ and being stable to most of corrosive chemicals as well. Its unique self-lubrication characteristic made it long life span and maintenance free in sealing assembly. While magnesium stabilized zirconia(Mg-PSZ) get a even better corrosion resistance in harsh chemical environments.
